Mission:
The Animal Welfare League is a nonprofit organisation founded in 2021 that seeks to promote good animal welfare practices in Ghana. They focus on working animals, poultry and livestock, companion animals, and wild and aquatic animals.
Animal Welfare League promotes animal welfare through individual/public outreach and institutional outreach by writing news articles, corporate campaigns about caging birds, and community awareness about donkeys in their donkey preservation project. The organisation also educates children in primary and senior high schools on animal welfare and encourages students to treat animals with kindness and dignity. Through their volunteer program, they also seek to train communities on the proper care and protection of animals. They plan to build Ghana’s first animal rescue centre and carry out the spaying and neutering of free-roaming animals.
Impact and achievements:
Visited 10 basic schools in Kumasi, over 1,100 basic school pupils educated on animal welfare.
Moderated an animal welfare seminar for veterinary students from the School of Veterinary Medicine, KNUST. Over 80 veterinary students introduced to animal welfare and one health, animal welfare in clinical practice, and individual animal welfare advocacy.
The government showed interest in their news article about donkey population concerns in the country and a committee was set up to look into the matter.
270 dogs and cats vaccinated against rabies at Nsuta, Sekyere Central District.
Plans with additional funding:
Conduct campaigns aimed to improve poultry and aquatic welfare in the country, including workshops, community education and cooperation campaigns.
Conduct national animal welfare education programmes at basic schools in the 16 regions of Ghana.
Establish Ghana’s first rescue shelter, especially for dogs involved in the dog meat trade.
