Liberia Animal Welfare & Conservation Society (LAWCS) is the voice of animals in Liberia. It is legally registered and accredited by the government of Liberia as a Liberian-based non-profit organization that promotes animal welfare and prevents cruelty to animals and humans.
They believe that promoting kindness and respect for animals along with practical care for animals is a key step towards developing empathy for, and rejecting violence against, all beings, including humans. Since its establishment in 2000, LAWCS has been providing humane education programs in schools and communities, free basic healthcare and treatment for animals, and responding to reports of animal abuse.
Impact and achievements:
Reached and inspired 20,000 kids with messages about animal welfare and animal protection
Provided direct veterinary care and treatment to over 10,000 companion and working animals
Conducted wildlife protection initiatives in over 30 communities with over 4,000 people
Reduced bushmeat trade and wildlife trafficking through awareness and support to law enforcement; Facilitated the confiscation of bushmeat and live animals along with the arrest of perpetrators of wildlife crimes
Reduced the consumption of farmed animals through the implementation of plant based diet programs in schools and communities that has reached over 5,000 kids and adults
Built the capacity of 100 animal science students in two institutions of higher learning in Liberia
Extended its program for working animals in Guinea with over 5,000 working animals directly benefiting from free healthcare and also educating animal owners about their responsibilities toward their animal
Awarded twice by Global Alliance for Rabies Control (2016 and 2020)
