Based in Ghana, the West Africa Centre for the Protection of Animal Welfare (WACPAW) is an animal welfare organisation advocating for the general health and wellbeing of animals and protecting the welfare of animals during transport and slaughter. They lobby with stakeholders and the authorities to draft policies aimed at improving attitudes of individuals and caregivers towards animals to reduce animal suffering. WACPAW also encourages good practice prior to and during transportation, at the lairage, and during slaughter.
Impact and achievements:
Rehabilitated the loading ramp of Savelugu cattle market which helped ease the suffering of ~70 cattle every week during unloading.
Rehabilitated the floor of the Tamale abattoir with terrazzo to prevent animals from slipping and breaking their hips before slaughter.
Trained ~600 cattle hauliers and ~300 hundred pig butchers on humane handling and slaughter.
Distributed humane slaughter equipment including captive bolt stunners, knives and knife sharpeners to ~6 slaughterhouses in Ghana, with 4 slaughterhouses accepting the use of captive bolt stunners in their practices.
Educated ~24 donkey owners and ~15 pet owners on donkey and pet welfare.
Trained ~30 students on administering first aid to animals.
Revised the curriculum of veterinary colleges in Ghana to include animal welfare courses
Plans with additional funding:
Operations and logistics (e.g. secure an office space, vehicles for transportation, and medical equipment).
Acquire a 100 acre land for an animal rescue and shelter farm and an animal welfare training centre.
